REVIEWS
UK based pianist and composer Andrea Vicari has delivered yet another superb album entitled Lost in Dreams. With a stellar cast of fellow musicians including Andrea on piano, Emma Rawicz on saxophone, Dorian Lockett on bass and Nic France on drums and percussion, this album most certainly pushes the boundaries of jazz offering fresh ideas and perspectives on jazz as an artform.
The album features 13 tracks composed by Vicari from the hauntingly beautiful Waters of Mars to the contemporary groove laden I was Asleep. Each composition offers fresh ideas compositionally while distinguishing themselves rhythmically from each other. My personal favourite is the harmonically driven and energetic Chickori, clearly a tribute to the great pianist and composer Chick Corea from whom Vicari draws inspiration. In my opinion, this track represents the epitome of this album with a dazzling display of technical mastery, rhythmic drive, innovative improvisation and a relentless pulsating rhythmic drive reminiscent of the great Chick Corea himself.
Vicari truly displays her amazing ability as a composer with each track portraying her innovative use of harmony, rhythm and improvisation. Clearly Andrea Vicari is one of our most innovative composers who has been flying below the radar for a long time. This album is certainly going to elevate her standing as an outstanding composer without taking away from her versatility as a world class pianist.
The ensemble is a perfect fit, each with a unique voice yet collectively performing as a coherent group supporting each other. The improvisational skills of Andrea, Emma Dorian and Nic cannot be overemphasized. Clearly, each of them are remarkable musicians that bring a wealth of experience to this album. At a time when jazz seems to have slipped away from the forefront of the music industry, this album reminds us of the remarkable ability of jazz to be creative, innovative and spontaneous.
Congratulations, to Andrea and the ensemble for producing such an inspirational album. I can only imagine the energy they will produce when performing live.
